France Jeton Phoenix – Ancienne Mutuelle Contre l’Incendie de Seine, 1843
Rare French octagonal insurance jeton (token) issued by the Ancienne Assurance Mutuelle Contre l’Incendie (Old Mutual Fire Insurance Company) for the Seine Inférieure et Eure districts. The obverse features a dramatic phoenix rising from flames beneath the Latin motto “E CINERE SUO REDIVIVUS” (“Reborn from its own ashes”), a fitting symbol of recovery and protection after fire. Around the border are the dates 22 Juillet 1818 and 28 Août 1843, commemorating the royal ordinances governing the company.
The reverse is encircled by a laurel wreath and inscribed “Ancienne Assurance Mutuelle Contre l’Incendie – Seine Inférieure et Eure”, with the engraver’s signature DEPAULIS F. at the bottom.
This attractive 19th-century jeton was likely presented to policyholders, company representatives, or directors rather than intended for circulation. It is an excellent example of early French fire insurance memorabilia, combining historical significance with finely executed medallic art.
